Writing Gets messy.

Whether it's 100-word flash fiction or fantasy trilogies, writing gets messy. Every writer I know has creative, publishing-worthy ideas, but struggles to get those ideas down perfectly. The result is a manuscript full of ink stains, blots in the margins, and half-formed "I'll write it later" paragraphs. Manuscripts easily clutter up with ink stains, but I love the ink stains because that's where all the potential of your manuscript is hidden. As an Editor, I'll grasp your writer's voice, nail-down the potentials, and collaborate with you to create a book that flies off shelves.

If you want an Editor that takes special consideration of your author's voice and your individual writing goals, then look no more. I'm right here.

Copy Editing Services, no AI, starting at a penny a word

Lost in the grammar?

Do you love writing but get lost in the extreme and, often confusing, rule book of English Grammar? Do punctuation and research citations drive you mad? Don't worry, you're not alone. But you may benefit from a copy edit. I am published academically, and can assist you with any grammar or research citation concerns.

Words not flowing?

If your sentences are choppy, the syntax is off, and your words just aren't "flowing," you probably need a line edit. A quality line edit clarifies your meaning, honors your voice, and makes sentences flow together flawlessly. I can make every word, sentence, and paragraph glide seamlessly off the page.

Ready to publish?

If you've written an amazing manuscript, and you think you're ready to publish, hold up. Wait a minute. You should probably get some feedback before sending it off to busy agents or subjecting it to Amazon's cutthroat customer reviews. I do quality Beta Reads and share my tips, thoughts, and reader experience with you.

Why I started
InkStains Editing...

Years ago, I had a writer friend who needed editing services. Being Academically published, and a self-professed grammar nerd, I reached out, thinking I could help them. As we spoke during the pre-editing consultation, they told me a few horror stories about their prior Editors. "Editors" who charged exorbitant amounts to essentially slash, cut, and trash everything individual, unique, and valuable in their manuscript.

I decided writers deserve better. With my Master's in English Literature in hand, I became certified, trained, and built this company. I believe that every one in the world has at least one story to tell—hidden in the blotches and buried in the margins, your story is waiting to be uncovered. I truly believe that every story matters, no matter how messy it is! As your Editor, my job isn’t to rewrite your story, but to find your voice and refine the raw, messy brilliance into something powerful, polished, and unmistakably yours. I find the  beauty in the imperfections, the clarity in the chaos, and the potential in every ink stain.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why do I need to hire an editor? Why would I pay someone for a job I can do myself?

Of course you can edit your book yourself! It just will take more time and effort on your part. Editors are simply a second pair of expert eyes diligently working in partnership with you to achieve your writing or publishing goals! We are not here to rewrite your manuscript or make you feel like a terrible writer. Our job is to grab your hand, and guide you through the writing process. If we've done our job well, you will become a better writer by the end.

How does the editing process work?

It changes slightly depending on the service, but generally looks like this: First, contact the Editor. Ask for a sample edit or consultation. Together, you and the Editor will discuss your writing or publication goals. Decide if you want to hire the Editor. Then the editor completes your service, and provides guidance. Then, you the author, review, accept, or reject their manuscript suggestions, and give monetary compensation.

What qualifications should an Editor have?

Editing in the U.S. is an unregulated occupation. So, be careful when choosing an Editor. They should have either certifications, training, or experience. Look for testimonials. They should absolutely offer a FREE sample edit and be willing to speak before being hired. But also, those qualifications aren't everything. Editors with experience at the "Big 5" may not feel the need to make every client 100% satisfied. So when all else fails, just go with your gut.

What if I don't have money for an Editor?

Many Editors understand that this is a common problem for writers, especially those who are unpublished. That is why most Editors are willing to adapt to your individual needs. Simply reach out to the Editor, explain your situation, and ask if they are willing to do a payment plan, etc.  In general, seek out Editors whose goal is not just to make a buck, but to genuinely help YOU. I am always willing to listen and adapt to my writer's needs, and my experience living abroad has made me compassionate for those who live in third-world countries, but still want to publish a book. If you're one of those people, please feel free to reach out to me.
